I Knew You Meant It
Laughter
is the food
of the soul.
We are nourished,
and we grow.
I long to hear you laugh,
like you did once, long ago.
When we were younger
and the world was our plaything.
We would run through the rain
and get soaked to the skin,
but never go inside.
And you kissed me like you meant it,
and I knew you meant it,
back when we were too young
to truly know what love was.
We didn’t know what it was
that we felt,
but we knew that we felt it.
It was as sweet and innocent
as the chocolate we shared
on Halloween,
those many years ago,
as simple as could be.
I fell asleep on your shoulder
and you rested your head on mine.
and I knew you meant it.
